interlude is a collective based in Amsterdam and occasionally in Paris & Marseille.
We curate & organise gatherings through listening sessions and other event formats.
We aim to prompt try-out spaces for live projects, amateur music, sound, writing & performance practices. Our events feature a diverse array of formats, including participatory music sessions, anecdotes, live performances with a Korg monolog, a polyphonic choir sound installation, documentary screenings, meditations, karaokes, collective DJ sets paired with BYOB and bread oven, outdoor lectures, a four-day radio program festival for the Rietveld graduation show, open calls, concerts, conferences, launches and hangouts. interlude serves also as a sound system and a public program for other projects. Each session is often complemented by food & drinks tailored to the theme, custom-made furniture and collaborative playlists. interlude is for people who want to give an audience to their projects, may they be in process or entirely finished.
We produce the communication and printed objects for every session, sometimes in collaboration. Each week, interlude also shares on Fragrantica FM a playlist based on its curator's perfume.
interlude is: Elsa Baslé, Alva Bücking, Liza Borovikova, Uma Naddermier
Session 00
That really made me think of..., March 2023
We invited each participant to contribute a song in order to distill all these secret messages that play out in the delicate act of sending and receiving music. After the session, we randomly redistributed the songs, and each person left with someone else’s choice. Food by Hagar Cohen.
Session 01
Can’t get you out of my head, April 2023
We gathered around the theme of loops and sampling. Using two screens and two sets of speakers, we designed a video and sound installation around the work of Pamela Z. A pioneer of live looping, she manipulates her voice to create complex sonic layers and combines experimental vocal techniques.
Session 03
One at a time (live), April 2023
Multimedia artist Kris van Melle created a live soundscape for us using a Korg Monologue and a Roland drum machine. Playing with the monophonic features of the synthesizer, they created ten sequences that allowed participants to find comfort in repetition while being surprised by each new combination of rhythms. Food by Hagar Cohen.
Session 04
ÄLG0$P34K, May 2023
The work of artists p3A and Raf often stems from their interest in sound and technology. They explore the evolution of software and technology and how it infiltrates daily life. Using a 16-speaker installation, they created a hypnotic polyphonic choir. Food by Hagar Cohen.
Session 05
Remember, you gotta breathe, May 2023
We introduced the work of Beverly Glenn Copeland through a short meditation and a listening session, followed by a screening of the documentary Keyboard Fantasies, which tells the story of this incomparable singer and composer who took us on a journey through time. Food by Hagar Cohen.
Session 06
Blue + Tooth, June 2023
Under the June sun, we gathered in the shade of trees to listen to a reading by writer Hanako Emden about the satin bowerbird. This was followed by a deeply blue listening session organised by Mae Smith and Lizzy Jongedijk. Food by Kateryna Lymar and Ethan Lieutet-Khnafo.
Session 07
A song is worth a million words, October 2023
A day of live performances at the ENTER ENTER gallery in Amsterdam. Invited by BYOB (Bring Your Own Book Fair), we brought together our graphic designer and publisher friends to activate their printed works through sound. Featuring Vincent Becher, Ity, Matthew Oxley, Sasha Anguelovskaia & the Nice Normal Family collective. Food by Hagar Cohen.
Session 08
O, December 2023
A symposium dedicated to the apostrophe, interpreted by Nancy Phantom, Bibliomania & Paul Bouigue, Hagar Cohen, Constanza Castagnet & Maria Paris Borda, Yoohee Cha, Sasha Anguelovskaia & Parsa Adibi. Live music, performances, readings, poems, interviews. Food by Hagar Cohen.
Session 09
Danger from Estonia, April 2024
The Joy of Music with DJ Brother B2B Kadri-Ann, visuals by Sasha Anguelovskaia and food by Gaida Erica Pärn in the Rietveld Pavilion.
Session 10
Read, Listen, Do, May 2024
A reading and listening session by Noiserr with ndmnk solutions.
"My body is an interchange of time. It is traversed with signals, noises, messages and parasites. It is not exceptional in this vast world. This remains true of animals and plants, of air and crystals, of cells and atoms, of groups and constructed objects. Transformation, deformation of information."
Session 11
Come early, stay late, May 2024
20+ contributors participated to our musical melodious page turning public program that took place in the Rietveld garden during BYOB (Bring Your Own Book Fair). Featuring Nour Ben Saïd, Vincent Becher, Dennis Farnsworth, Maïté Jackson collective...
Session 12
Our roof out of lego, May 2024
Dj set by Ladylovelace & dance performance by Amdh, from Palestine and France. A session on embracing nostalgia all together in same time same place, a mixture of two childhoods joining under one roof forgetting the anxiety of growing up and the stress of adulthood.
Session 13
Sonic Tapestry, May 2024
Melodies collected all over Amsterdam entwined in this collectively woven soundscape forming a 2-day program of 15+ contributions of recordings, live music and ice cold tahini ice cream. Together with Paul Gangloff and his students from Basic Year Group F. Food by Hagar Cohen and Chaemin Hwang.
Session 14
Elastic Collisions: Lingual Music from the Lily Greenham Archive, June 2024
A listening session / talk / reading of sounds and materials by artist, sound poet and composer Lily Greenham (1924–2001) drawn from the Lily Greenham Archive at Goldsmiths, University of London.
“With lingual music, Greenham deployed her voice as a radical sonic resource on reel-to-reel tape: letters, syllables, words, and sentences are distended, superimposed, repeated or reinterpreted into beat-like units.” A session by typographer, writer and curator Andrew Walsh-Lister, with Giulia Nicolai.
Session 15
Against the Written Word, September 2024
The printed word encourages a sense of closure, a sense that what is found in a text has been finalised, has reached a state of completion. For this event, interlude invited Giulia Nicolai to host a "Back to School" open-to-all participatory writing event, with k. cidder, a researcher and sound artist from Bristol.
Lectures by Matthew Hoxley and Chloé Gourvennec, followed by EYES, an exploration of the broader IJ river network, the version of modernity its waters communicate and the contrasts that are concealed by its liquid framing. Food by Kateryna Lymar.
Session 16
bricks on bricks on bricks, October 2024
A listening session, installation, drinks & concert featuring Timo van Sark (ity), Pedro Kastelijns & qbae
During the evening, radio signals—ranging from distant broadcasts to ambient interference—were captured, manipulated, and transmitted through various objects. After Timo’s performance, Pedro Kastelijns & qbae played songs around the question “How to build a house and how to live in it?” A multicolored sonic journey rooted in Brazilian grooves, jazz, improvisation and MCing.
Session 17
Music for Biscuits, and other Preconditional Tunes, November 2024
Music for lighthouse-keeping, lovers, or the dining room of the athlete’s village at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964; a quick search on the music database Discogs indicates that as of November 2024, it contains 3,363 unique entries that have “music for …” in their title. These titles suggest that the music is preconditional; they are, for example, intended for a specific place, activity, or audience. During “Music for Biscuits and Other Preconditional Sounds,” sound artist Oscar van Leest shared some general reflections on the historical and contemporary contexts of listening and host a listening session featuring some of his favorite finds among the vast number of “Music for …” works that exist.
Session 18
No step in between, December 2024
The unconscious expressed in uncensored movement. Using tools from the Authentic Movement, dancer and artist Maren Weertman lead us to a movement session where the focus laid on getting back to our bodies and into our own intuition. Followed by writing and drawing exercises with Chloé Gourvennec.
