interlude
is an ever-changing formation of people gathering regularly to collectively un—learn and un—mute through listening and sounding practices. The first edition was initiated by Uma Naddermier, Elsa Baslé and Alva Bücking from the Graphic Design Department at the Rietveld Academie in 2023.
During the spring, the listening sessions took place within the school —open for students, teachers and staff, in the form of readings, screenings, live soundscapes, installations, performances, meditations and other sonic formats.
Inspired by Pauline Oliveros’ practice and philosophy, these experiences are invitations to explore emancipatory practices through the forces of sound and listening. She argues that by training our listening, we start hearing the asymmetries of the world, the things that are out of balance, the disturbances and the injustices. By cultivating self and collective consciousness, we would thus like to investigate the radicality of careful and deep listening. Our project comes from a place of personal research, curiosity and genuine interest in the exploration of these practices. We are always seeking to approach it in a non-hierarchical way, learning from each other as well as all participants, creating support structures for others to feel held and heard.
